  • The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian government initiative that provides support and services to people with disabilities, their families, and carers. It aims to empower individuals with disabilities by giving them greater choice and control over the supports they receive.

The NDIS provides funding for a range of services and supports tailored to each person's unique needs, including healthcare, therapy, equipment, and assistance with daily activities. Its goal is to help people with disabilities participate fully in social, economic, and community life.

  • To determine if you are eligible for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), you must meet the following criteria:

Residency: You must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa.

Age: You must be under 65 years of age when you apply for the NDIS.

Disability: You must have a permanent disability that significantly affects your ability to participate effectively in everyday activities, or have a developmental delay that significantly affects your functional capacity.

Early Intervention Requirements: If you are under 7 years of age, you may be eligible if you have a developmental delay or a disability that is likely to cause a significant developmental delay.

If you meet these eligibility criteria, you can apply for access to the NDIS by contacting the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and completing an Access Request Form.

The NDIA will then assess your eligibility based on the information provided and may request additional documentation or assessments if needed. If you are deemed eligible, you will work with the NDIA to develop a personalized NDIS plan outlining the supports and services you require to achieve your goals and improve your quality of life.

  • Your NDIS plan is your roadmap to realizing your aspirations and needs. It's a personalized document that allocates funding to support your unique goals and requirements. With this funding, you gain the power to select the providers and services that best suit your preferences and empower your journey.

During your planning meeting with an NDIA planner, you'll discuss your objectives and aspirations. You have the option to invite someone from your support network to join these conversations, ensuring your plan truly reflects your desires and circumstances.

As life evolves and your needs shift, your plan can adapt accordingly. It's a dynamic tool that changes with you, ensuring you always receive the tailored support necessary to achieve your goals and aspirations.

  • After checking the eligibility criteria, you need to:

Complete Access Request: Choose between completing an Access Request Form (ARF) or making a Verbal Access Request (VAR). The ARF can be downloaded from the NDIS website, or you can call the National Access Team on 1800 800 110 to make a VAR.

Provide Disability Information: You will need assistance from professionals, such as your doctor and occupational therapist, to apply to the NDIS. They will write reports detailing how your disability impacts your daily life. These reports must use language that aligns with the NDIS legislation and will provide evidence to the NDIS planner for creating your plan.

Submit Documentation: Submit any required documentation, including reports from professionals, along with your Access Request Form or as part of your Verbal Access Request.

Wait for Assessment: The NDIS will assess your application based on the information provided, and they may request additional information or assessments if necessary.

Plan Development: If your application is approved, you will work with the NDIS planner to develop a personalized NDIS plan based on your needs and goals.

Implement Your Plan: Once your NDIS plan is finalized, you can begin accessing the supports and services outlined in the plan to help you achieve your goals and improve your quality of life.

  • Absolutely, having support during the NDIS planning process can make a significant difference. Here's a breakdown of key points to remember:

Choose Your Support: Whether it's a family member, friend, or member of your support team like an occupational therapist, having someone you trust by your side is invaluable. They can provide emotional support, help articulate your needs, and ensure your voice is heard.

Prepare in Advance: Before your planning meeting, work with your support team to document what matters most to you and the types of support you require to achieve your goals. This documentation, often called a 'pre-plan,' is essential for ensuring your needs are clearly communicated to the NDIA.

Use Clear Language: Your support team will help articulate your needs using language that aligns with the NDIS criteria. They will demonstrate how each type of support relates to your goals and meets the 'reasonable and necessary' criteria required by the NDIS.

Planning Meeting: Your NDIS plan will be developed in a planning meeting with an NDIA planner. Having a trusted support person present during this meeting can provide reassurance and ensure your needs are accurately represented.

Stay Informed: Throughout the planning process, don't hesitate to ask questions or seek clarification from your NDIA planner. It's essential to understand the process and feel empowered to advocate for yourself.

Remember, the NDIS planning process is designed to be person-centered, meaning your needs and preferences are at the forefront. With the right support, you can navigate this process with confidence and develop a plan that truly reflects your goals and aspirations.

  • Absolutely, preparing for your NDIS planning meeting allows you to reflect on what truly matters to you and ensures that your needs and preferences are effectively communicated. Here's a breakdown of key points to consider during your preparation:

Current Supports: Think about the support you currently receive that is important to include in your plan. Consider why these supports are important to you and how they contribute to your well-being and independence.

Identify Gaps: Reflect on any supports or services that you need but currently do not have. Consider how these additional supports could enhance your quality of life, improve your independence, or help you achieve your goals.

Impact on Quality of Life: Think about how the supports you are seeking would improve your overall quality of life. Consider the positive changes or outcomes that could result from having these supports in place.

Consequences of Lack of Support: Consider what might happen if you did not have access to the supports you need. Reflect on the potential impact on your well-being, independence, and ability to participate in daily activities or achieve your goals.

Documentation: Write down your thoughts, concerns, and preferences related to supports and services you want to discuss during the planning meeting. This will help you stay organized and ensure that all important topics are addressed.

Support Person: Consider having a trusted support person accompany you to the planning meeting. This individual can help you articulate your needs, provide emotional support, and ensure that all important points are discussed and recorded.

By taking the time to prepare for your planning meeting and considering these key questions, you can ensure that your NDIS plan accurately reflects your needs, preferences, and goals, leading to better outcomes and improved quality of life.
